Methodology to teach poetry

In my last post I was focused on some teaching resources that teacher can use on poetry. But now I am going to treat to the methodology. Poetry requires a lot of knowledge from the teacher and that it can take their students to the understanding, creation and imagination in the same, so, I hope give you some keys of this topic.

When you want to teach it there are three approaches that we have into account. These are:

Cultural approach: we need to establish connections between the context and poem, for example, they could learn historical and cultural circumstances as those related to authorship and these are relevant when reading a text.

Language approach: Poetry, in this case, is concentrated in the word, and how the author produces effects on the reader. Also, we can focus on interpretation and the meaning of it.

Personal approach: about this, teachers need to use this approach to cause, encourage the curiosity and feelings to students. Besides, they could transmit their thinks, feels or opinions.

That you can see you have to connected all of this when you teach because students have to feel part of it, involve them.
So  many teacher create a special place where students can feel emotions or compare with something nearer to them or they explain what story is happened in the poem through a bit role playing or performance or using a song but all of these ideas have to treated  through three approach.

In my opinion, I think that the most important thing is to make our students feel comfortable when learn poetry because there are many children that hate poetry for my reason but I believe that solution is on teachers.

Have a very good week classmate.

See you soon
Andrea.

  1. Hello Andre!

I have read your post and I would like to comment it.

Poetry is a useful tool to emply in our classes and it is a chance to play with language because ir can develop the sensitivity and the creativity, children can see things with different angles, it promotes the critival thinking and it makes you enjoy.

I agree with you, currently children do not like poetry for many reasons and most of them think that poetry is boring and difficult, but teacher can change it. Moreover, poetry is not worked enough in the classrooms and when we spend some time it is only to read but poetry offers a lot of possibilities and activities to work with it.

Children can learn, enjoy and might like it, if someone approaches them with a natural and attractive way. Who can get this goal? Teacher is the person to transmit how beautiful is a poem, because teachers have an important role in the formation and improvement of children. Furthemore, some characteristics that poetry should have are: musicality, simplicity and literary aesthetics. We have to take into account this characteristic in order to choose the best poems for our students.

During our practical classes we have learn a lot and useful things about poetry, how to use it with children in a creative and enjoyable way and how to involve them but it is important that we know what poetry means if we want to show it in the best way to our students. One of our maun objectives is help students to create poetry, to get the reading as an enjoyment not as a duty.

Finally, I would like to say that I enjoy with your post. It is interesting and contain useful information.
